simple craft: kid’s toiletry case

Valor is big enough now that I feel like he needs to brush his teeth nightly, even on vacations. So I got him a toothbrush holder for our upcoming trip to the mountains with the Lis. Unfortunately that meant I could no longer fit all his toiletries into their little, battered ziplock bag. So as a coming-of-age rite I decided to personalize Valor a “real” bathroom bag for his toothbrush, toothpaste, nail clippers, hair brush, diaper cream, etc. that we take on trips.

I got 2 nesting zippered bags at WalMart for $5 and personalized the clear vinyl one with stickers I already had. I applied the stickers to the sticky side of a length of packing tape, then carefully stuck the packing tape inside the vinyl bag with the stickers caught between the vinyl and the tape to keep them waterproof. I think it turned out pretty well.

The tricky part was not getting the tape dirty with fingerprints or lint while I worked with it. Also, doing a design with no straight lines in it helped, since it’s almost impossible to get the tape completely straight inside the bag. Avoid really 3-D stickers that will be hard to slick flat under the tape.

You could do this for personalized birthday party favors, for a pencil/pen case for kids’ backpacks, or gift bags for teen girls as well. My reward was showing it to Valor and hearing him say, “Ohhhhhhh, ‘MENT mixer! Ohhhhhhhh, DUMP ‘ruck!”

  1. Great idea, Abby! Love it. I think I’ll use it when Christmas rolls around for cheap/neat gifts for my nieces and nephews.

  2. I think of James tonight as I remember learning of his transition to heaven. Though you are missed by many and loved by more it is a beautiful thought to know that you are jubilant staring in the face of Jesus, what a blessing..miss you sweet baby james.
